What to write in a job email?

A friend of mine recently asked me where the content of a cover letter should be for a job application. While I am no specific expert, this was my response to him.

Cover letters should be in separate files, along with resume or curriculum vitae. The email is not a cover letter, but a prelude to the application itself. So rather than put the content of the cover letter as an email, it is fine to write a short precursor email along the lines of:

Dear X,

I am responding to the advert for the position of Y, as seen at Z. Please find attached with this email my cover letter and resume/curriculum vitae for your consideration.

Thank you for your time, I hope to hear from you soon,

Regards,
Me.

Simple, short, provides the information required.
